In 1969, after completing his second tour in Vietnam and retiring from a 22-year career in the United States Marine Corps, Richard Morey Sr. returned home to St. Augustine, Florida, and founded Morey’s Relocation Group.
From the very beginning, Morey’s was built around two principles that would define the company for generations to come: uncompromising integrity and a genuine commitment to serving others.
What started as a local moving company grew into one of Florida’s most respected independent relocation companies, with trucks traveling across town, throughout the state, and from coast to coast. Morey’s reputation wasn’t built on flashy promises. It was built one customer, one move, and one handshake at a time.
In 1983, Richard Morey Sr.’s son, Richard Morey Jr., completed his own service as a Marine and returned home to join the family business. By 1985, Richard Jr. and his mother, Maureen Morey, were supervising the day-to-day operations. In 1993, Richard’s wife, Candace, came on board to help coordinate and organize the company’s growth as the business continued to scale.
Morey’s was more than a family-owned business. It was a family in every sense of the word. And that family understood something that remains at the heart of our company today: when someone trusts you with everything they own, you have a responsibility to treat it—and them—with the utmost care.
Thousands of miles away, another moving company was being built on many of those same principles.
In 2011, Gabriel Schwaiger founded Smooth Movers in Laramie, Wyoming. The company began humbly—with a one-room office with orange shag carpet, no windows, two parking spaces, and a whole lot of determination.What came next was anything but humble.
Smooth Movers grew into the largest independently owned moving company in Wyoming, expanding from those modest beginnings into a substantial operation with a fleet of trucks and a reputation built on honesty, hard work, and fair dealing—the values of the American West.
Mr. Schwaiger believed that the best way to grow a moving company was simple: take care of your customers.
That philosophy shaped everything from the way employees were trained to the way moves were performed. Smooth Movers developed intensive training programs and made a commitment to employing highly trained Master Movers who understood that moving isn’t simply about lifting boxes and loading trucks.
It’s about helping people through some of life’s biggest transitions.
Where Experience Meets Purpose
Eventually, the paths of Richard Morey and Gabriel Schwaiger came together.
Both had built their reputations in the moving industry by putting people first, refusing to compromise on their standards, and understanding that a company’s reputation is earned through its actions—not its advertising.
Together, they formed Smooth Movers, bringing generations of relocation experience and two family-business traditions under one name.
Today, Smooth Movers continues that legacy at locations across the United States, helping families, individuals, and businesses, navigate local and long-distance moves with the same care, professionalism, and integrity that started this journey decades ago.
